Dr. Claudia Mahler, German Institute for Human Rights
Bio:
Dr. Claudia Mahler is an Austrian lawyer and internationally recognized human rights expert specializing in the rights of older persons. She has served as the United Nations Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons (2020 to 2026). She is based at the German Institute for Human Rights in Berlin.
Claudia Mahler has played an important role in advancing international efforts towards a legally binding instrument, a Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.
Through her thematic reports, country visits and advocacy within the UN system, she has consistently highlighted gaps in the existing international human rights framework. Her work has focused on age discrimination and problems of ageism, social protection, care, violence and abuse, and the participation of older persons in society.
